By Ian Anderson The word Internet has quickly become part of the vocabulary of most Australians, specially the younger ones. But what impact will the Net have on Australian society? How well prepared is Australia for the technology? Daniel Petre and David Harrington, both with a background of working for Microsoft in Australia and overseas, explore such questions in a book released last month by Lansdowne Publishing and Pan Macmillan (The Clever Country? Australia’s Digital Future, $19.95). Petre and Harrington claim that the Boards of too many Australian companies are well behind their American counterparts in incorporating on-line technology into their businesses. “For the average Australian senior manager there is almost a stigma attached to using a PC,” they say. “Many take the view that the Internet is simply a curiosity appealing to a small number of computer geeks, and irrelevant to a serious businessman.” This, they maintain,
